Probably the oldest representation of a smoker yet discovered, this almost life size depiction in carved stone of the ancient god of the Maya underworld was found in the Temple of the Cross pyramid at Palenque. It dates from the Late Classic Period (690 AD) and flanks the entrance to a large wall plaque showing Lord Pacal and his son and heir, Chan Bahlum. Perhaps the cigar-smoking God L helped the young king as a guide through the sacred rituals, or served as a spirit witness to the accession of Chan Bahlum to the throne of Palenque after Pacal's death. |
